Mary LOSSOS' maiden name is still questionable. It appears as "May
Sickota" on the death certificate of her son Joseph. It was interpreted
as "Tiegrete" by the priest at St. James Church, as seen on the
baptismal record of her son John. "Suegueta" is how it looked to me
on the marriage record of her son John's wedding to Margaret KNICHEL
(at St. John's Church in St. Louis). Mary died of senile debility
according to the death certificate. She is buried in Walnut Hill
Cemetery, Belleville, Ill., however the location of the gravesite is
indeterminable. Died at the home of her daughter, Mary Gruenwald.
Obit: The follwing was copied from the St. Louis Globe Democrat (dated
October 9, 1900): "Mrs. Mary LOSSOS died on Sunday night at 12:30
at her home, 309 North Church street, aged 81 years. She was born
in Germany and came to Millstadt, in this county, in 1853. She was
twice married, her first husband dying the same year they located in
Millstadt. She married Frank LOSSOS, her second husband, in 1855,
and he died six years ago. She leaves two sons and two daughters."
From the Belleville newspaper: "Mrs. Mary LOSSOS, an aged and
respected resident of Belleville, died in her home, 509 North Church at
12:30 Monday morning, aged 81 years. The deceased was a native of
Germany, and was born July 4, 1819. She came to America in 1853 and
settled in Millstadt. She was twice married, her first husband, the late
Martin Stier, dying the same year they located in Millstadt. She was
married to her second husband, Mr. Frank LOSSOS in 1855 and who
died about six years ago. After the death of her husband, in 1897,
she came to Belleville and made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Mary
Gruenewald. Besides her daughter named above, she leaves her sons
Joseph and John LOSSOS and her daughter, Mrs. John Keim, in St.
Louis, also several grand-children." Comments: Frank's death should
have read sixteen years, not six (he actually died in July, 1883). The
two sons were Joseph and John LOSSOS, and the daughters were Anna
Stiehs Keim and Mary Stiehs Gruenewald.
