Richard Everett Wilder, was also a teacher. He spent many years in successful labor in Massachusetts and Kentucky. He was near twenty years in the neighborhood of Lexington, Kentucky. He said, "Having experienced the evils of the peculiar institution, I longed to breathe the air of freedom. I gathered up my little family and came to this place (Greenfield, Illinois) in 1852, taking charge of the new seminary then just completed." He afterward built for himself a private academy, where in 1876, he was still at his work.
