George was a carpenter according to the birth certificate of C.
V. Hughes. According to the obit of his other son, Joel, in 1952,
George was a Methodist minister.
George and Rosilla were married on the same date that Rosilla's
sister, Freelove SHERMAN, married Benjamin BURNETT (maybe a double
ceremony?).
Dave and Mary searched National Archives in Washington, D.C. on
8/2/89. We found two George Hughes that served in the Union Army
during the Civil War. One was born in 1830 in Waterford, Ireland, and
the other was born in 1833 in Dublin, Ireland. Both joined in
Massachusetts.
There was a George W. Hughes, a Methodist minister, in upstate
New York in the 1870s, but research has proven that this was not
"our" George.

He lived in Dorchester in 1658. Nine children were born in Mendon. Death
was certified. In 1674 the King Philip's War commenced. Mendon was perhaps
the first town in the Bay Colony to suffer the consequences. Abraham Staples
served in the colonial forces; his family took refuge with relatives in
Weymouth. Finally, August 12, 1676 King Philip was killed. The war ended with
the Indians practically exterminated in New England.
Abraham and his family were among the first to return to Mendon in 1678. They
rebuilt their home, possibly the frame house which remained in the family for
140 years. Sergeant Abraham Staples died October 20, 1703. His total estate
amounted to over a thousand Pounds, a handsome amount at the time. His wife,
Mary survived him for nearly nine years to March 9, 1712.
Their graves are still prominent in Mendon.

as if she had a premonition, she tried to hide, to avoid the doctor.

Information from his death certificate (obtained 4/1987) states the
following facts: died at the age of 76 years, 5 months, 22 days;
he died of apoplexy (a stroke), with artriosclerosis as contributory
cause; he was buried in the Omro Cemetery (visited by Dave and Mary
in August, 1988) on Oct 2, 1908; the informant on the death certificate
was his son, C. A. Coe, Jr.; his occupation at the time of death was
a farmer.
According to the 1905 Wisconsin State Census, C. A. Coe and
"Emma M. Coe" were alive and living in Omro (Winnebago County) as a
retired farmer. Both listed their age as 72.
Charles A. Coe, Sr. parents were both born in Massachusetts.
Much of the data on Charles and Mary was found on the 1900 U. S.
Census taken June 6, 1900, in Oshkosh City, Winnebago County,
Wisconsin. Charles' occupation was listed as blacksmith. They had two
children, and only Charles Jr. was alive at the time of the census.

"our" Charles COE.

It is believed that David was possibly left an orphan during his
voyage to Cape Cod from his native Ireland in about 1652. The story
goes that the ship's captain confiscated the family's "wealth", leaving
young David to a life of indentured servitude. He is first recorded in
the Plymouth Colony Records in 1655. It is recorded that Jane Powell,
servant to William Swift of Sandwich, confessed to a charge of
fornication with David Ogillior (cross between phonetic spelling and
poor spelling), the Irishman, servant to Edward Sturgis, saying that
she was lured into it "by him goeing for water one evening, hopeing to
have married him, beeing shee was in a sadd and miserable condition by
hard service". Evidently his period of indentureship expired in or
prior to 1657, for he and others took the oath of fidelity and were
admitted as inhabitants of Yarmouth with the right to vote. He turned
to farming and fishing.
